The butterfly gland that has a big impact

January marks new beginnings. Maybe you’ve made a New Year’s Resolution to start a new hobby. Maybe you’re starting off the year with a commitment to better health. Or maybe you want to learn a new skill this year. January also marks Thyroid Awareness Month. Why not combine the new beginnings associated with this month and Thyroid Awareness to focus on improving your health?

What is the thyroid?

The thyroid is a small butterfly shaped gland in your neck. It’s primary function is to create and release two hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). These hormones help the cells in your body to work properly.

Why is thyroid awareness important?

Since the thyroid gland controls so much of your body systems, it’s important to catch when it isn’t working properly. A myriad of issues can be linked to thyroid issues including: osteoporosis, vision loss, fertility problems, heart issues, stroke, excessive weight loss or gain, and depression.

What are the most common thyroid disorders?

As many as 30 million Americans may be suffering from thyroid disease. Women are five times more likely to suffer from hypothyroidism. The most common thyroid disorders are:

  • Hyperthyroidism: this means your gland is too active and produces too many hormones. This results in an overactive metabolism. Some of the symptoms you may experience include brittle hair, shaky hands, heart palpitations, weight loss, problems sleeping, and high blood pressure.
  • Hypothyroidism: This is the most common thyroid disorder and is when your thyroid isn’t active enough. Some of the symptoms you may experience include weight gain, tiredness, slow pulse, muscle cramps, puffy or swollen face, constipation, and dry/thick skin and hair.
  • Thyroid tumors: Thyroid nodules and adenomas are small noncancerous growths. These often don’t cause any symptoms until they are large enough to affect the surrounding tissues and organs. Symptoms could include: rapid weight loss, irregular pulse, swelling in the neck, fatigue, changes in voice, difficulty swallowing, and pain in the neck.
  • Thyroid cancer: Thyroid cancer is most common in patients who have undergone radiation to the head, neck, or chest. Most thyroid cancers are asymptomatic and are found by the discovery of a lump of nodule either by a physical examination or by an ultrasound.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms we’ve reviewed or feel a lump in your neck, it’s time to make a doctor appointment. Discuss your concerns with a medical professional. Addressing any thyroid issues can help you avoid more serious medical conditions. If you haven’t had a physical in the last 12 months, this is a good time to do routine blood work as well.
