UNDERSTANDING THE RISKS
The US population is seeing a strong growth in the size of the senior population. In 2016, 49 million adults were 65 or older. In nine years, that population is expected to reach 71 million, and by 2060, this age group should be 25% of the total US population. As our population is aging, we need to ensure we are understanding the health concerns for our geriatric population and how we can better prepare for and prevent these health problems.
ARTHRITIS
The CDC estimates 50% of senior adults suffer from arthritis. The most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Many patients who suffer from arthritis become less active. The loss of physical activity can not only cause weight gain but also lead to depression due to lack of socialization. If you are beginning to see signs of arthritis, talk with your doctor. Put a plan together so that you can stay active.
COGNITIVE DECLINE
Many fear memory loss. Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia affect the brain’s ability to remember and process. Know the signs of Alzheimer’s disease. Get checked if you have any concerns for yourself or a loved one. Early detection matters.
HEART DISEASE
Heart disease is the top killer in senior adults. Normal aging causes your heart and blood vessels to stiffen. This can lead to heart conditions that could result in high blood pressure, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and atrial fibrillation. Recognize heart disease symptoms so that you too don’t become a statistic.
DIABETES
It is estimated that 33% of senior adults, age 65 or older, have diabetes. Maintaining your blood sugar and hemoglobin A1C will help avoid complications such as:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Nerve damage (neuropathy)
- Kidney damage (nephropathy)
- Eye damage (retinopathy)
- Foot damage
- Skin conditions
- Hearing impairment
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Depression
