What is the range of a healthy blood pressure?

This is an important answer to know. May marks Blood Pressure Awareness Month and is a great time to educate yourself on your personal blood pressure and if it is within a healthy range.

Blood pressure is the pressure of flowing blood pressing against the wall of the arteries. According to the CDC, nearly half of all adult Americans have hypertension, also referred to as high blood pressure. Blood pressure rises and falls throughout the day with activity, but a resting high blood pressure can cause damage to your heart if it stays high for too long.

The only way to know if you have a healthy blood pressure is to have it tested. Once you have the numbers, this American Heart Association chart can help you to understand your results.

WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN?

Your blood pressure is measured in two numbers. The systolic blood pressure which indicates how much force your blood exerts against the artery walls with each heartbeat. The diastolic blood pressure measures the force your heart exerts on the artery walls between each heartbeat.

WHAT DOES A HYPERTENSION DIAGNOSIS MEAN?

Hypertension should be taken seriously. According to 2011 data, over 32% Tennesseans age 20+ were diagnosed with hypertension. This doesn’t even account for all cases considering 1 in 5 adults are unaware of their condition.

High blood pressure was a primary or contributing cause of death in nearly half a million Americans in 2018. It’s seen as the silent killer since many are unaware of their hypertension condition.

WHY IS THIS MESSAGE MORE IMPORTANT NOW THAN BEFORE?

Hypertension increases the risk of stroke. The American Heart Association indicates stroke survivors have an increased risk of COVID-19 complications. Understand your risks and discuss a plan with your doctor.
