Why see a podiatrist regularly?
Many Americans suffer from diabetes. According to the CDC, over 37 million Americans(or 1 in 10 people) have diabetes. Even more concerning is that 1 in 5 people who suffer from the disease don’t even know it. When you have type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use insulin properly. This can create a myriad of issues including foot problems.
Why are diabetics prone to foot problems?
Over a period of time, high blood sugar can cause nerve and blood vessel damage in the feet. This condition, called diabetic neuropathy, includes pain and numbness in the legs, feet, and sometimes even your hands. Symptoms can also include a tingling feeling, pain, or even a loss of feeling in the extremities. For some patients, issues extend to problems with the digestive system, urinary tract, blood vessels and heart. This serious diabetes condition affects as many as 50% of diabetics.
How should you take care of your feet?
To monitor your foot condition and take care of your feet, be sure to do the:
- Wash your feet daily. Be sure to dry your feet thoroughly getting the moisture between each of the toes.
- Apply lotion but avoid the area between your toes.
- Trim your toenails and file away sharp edges.
- Check for any sores or redness on your feet. If you find any of these spots or cuts or blisters, be sure to tell your doctor. It’s important to stay on top of your foot health to avoid complications.
- Check your shoes for rocks.
- Wear moisture wicking socks.
- Don’t choose fashion over function. Properly fitting shoes that don’t cause blisters are important.
Why should you see a podiatrist?
Diabetic patients should have a podiatrist as part of your medical team to care for your condition. This specialist can help detect and treat issues to avoid further complications. Diabetes can lead to mobility issues and possible amputation when you don’t have proper medical care. You may suffer from reduced circulation in your extremities or you may suffer from infection when sores or ulcers do not heal properly.
What will a podiatrist do?
A podiatrist will perform a visual inspection of your feet. Then toenails will be trimmed, calluses or corns will be removed, and dry skin on heels will be treated. If any abnormalities or injuries are detected, a treatment plan will be put in place for these. Any foot deformities that need to be corrected will also be discussed. As part of the appointment, patients are also usually screened for peripheral arterial disease or neuropathy. A podiatrist will also recommend footwear or orthotics that are best for the patient.
